THE GREAT SHIGENOBU ?KUMA — My Ticket To Freedom in my Own Home in Japan

Above photo is an original albumen print, taken 1903 by Herbert Ponting for the Underwood & Underwood stereoview company. It was taken in Okuma’s own house in the suburbs of Tokyo. Full 3-D version seen here : www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2652499527/ Okuma is about age 65 in this photo.
The illustrious description of this man which I have attached below (if you even read it at all) amounts to nothing more than insignificant tripe that pales in comparison to the REAL value of this great Japanese Statesmen and Leader, and that is….
HE WORE SHOES IN THE HOUSE INSTEAD OF TAKING THEM OFF AT THE DOOR.
In Japan, that is almost the ultimate sin, coming just after "telling the truth".
What a guy.
So, whenever my Japanese wife starts giving me grief about my NOT taking my shoes off before coming in the house, and starts spouting off about "When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do", I simply whip out this photo and present it to her, with a reminder that Japan is not Rome.
Thank you MARQUIS DE COUNT OKUMA ! You have helped me defy the customs of Japan in your own country ! You have made me King and Ruler in my own house ! Thank you for tromping around all over your tatami mats while wearing your outdoor shoes, and giving us a clear photo to prove it !
PS. Dear Okuma-san. Do you have any advise on how to get my wife to cook meals for me again, or how I can get her to let me back in the bedroom ? Thanks in advance for your kind reply. Your eternal fan, Okinawa_Soba

From the Wiki :
The Marquis Shigenobu ?kuma(1838 – 1922). One of the most popular statesmen in Japanese history….Mr. ?kuma was also an early advocate of Western science and culture in Japan, and FOUNDER OF WASEDA UNIVERSITY.
During a trip to Nagasaki, ?kuma met a Dutch missionary named Guido Verbeck, who taught him the English language and provided him with copies of the New Testament and the American DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. These works are often said to have affected his political thinking profoundly, and encouraged him to support efforts to abolish the existing feudal system and work toward the establishment of a constitutional government in Japan.
In 1868 [at age 30] Okuma was placed in charge of foreign affairs for the new Meiji government. He was soon given an additional post as head of Japan’s monetary reform program. He was elected to the first Diet of Japan in 1870 and soon became Minister of Finance, in which capacity he instituted property and taxation reforms that aided Japan’s early industrial development. He also unified the nation’s currency, created the national mint, and a separate Ministry of Industry.
In 1882, ?kuma co-founded the Constitutional Progressive Party (Rikken Kaishint?) which soon attracted a number of other leaders, including Ozaki Yukio and Inukai Tsuyoshi. That same year, ?kuma founded the Tokyo Semmon Gakko in the Waseda district of Tokyo. The school later became Waseda University, one of the country’s most prominent institutions of higher education.
Hirobumi It? again appointed ?kuma to the post of Foreign Minister in February 1888 to deal with the difficult issue of negotiation revisions to the "unequal treaties" with the Western powers. The treaty he negotiated was perceived by the public as too conciliatory to the Western powers, and created considerable controversy. ?kuma was attacked by a member of the Genyosha in 1889, and HIS RIGHT LEG WAS BLOWN OFF by a bomb. He retired from politics at that time.
He returned to politics in 1896 by reorganizing the Rikken Kaishinto into the Shimpoto (Progressive Party). In 1897, Matsukata Masayoshi convinced ?kuma to participate in his second administration as Foreign Minister and Agriculture and Commerce Minister, but again, he remained in office for only one year before resigning.
In June of 1898, ?kuma co-founded the Kenseito (Constitutional Government Party), by merging his Shimpoto with Itagaki Taisuke’s Jiyuto, and was APPOINTED BY THE EMPEROR to form the first partisan cabinet in Japanese history.
After his political retirement, ?kuma became president of Waseda University and chairman of the Japan Civilization Society, from which scholars’ many translations of European and American texts were published. He also gathered support for Japan’s first expedition to Antarctica.

If you have actually read this far, here’s the deal on his shoes (as opposed to my little spoof of a story at the top)…..
The REAL reason he probably kept the shoes on in the house was for exceptional orthopedic reasons. His leg had been blown off 15 years prior to this photo being taken, and he was fitted with whatever prosthetic could be made for him at the time. To keep balanced with the matching and protective footwear, he used the cane in the photograph — his trusted companion.
His is a special exception, and not at all something done in defiance of his wife or custom. No doubt, those were the cleanest shoes in the world, and when coming into the house, he no doubt had a servant (or family member) clean the soles to perfection before walking on the tatami mats.

I don’t know why I like these I do. But due to silly Australian quaratine/customs rules no more frosted pop-tarts will be allowed to be imported.
Stupid fact: my diet sucks (ala eating crap like this and cupcakes) and I’m still losing weight.
Cyano

Cyano the slime monster resides in the swamps. He lives on a diet of algae and fungus and the odd aligator. He is always dripping with yellow and green slime making him unpopular to the locals when he pops in for his daily newspaper as he always leaves a slimy mess wherever he goes.

The Countdown Begins!

This is not a brain. It’s a mixture of two types of ground sausage, baking mix, and three cheeses. Tomorrow, we’ll make 1/2-inch balls and bake them, as we’ve done, once a year, since we’ve been married. This year, a friend will come over and help us to consume them.
Sausage balls are an essential indulgence for New Year’s Eve!
